Crowbox v3 – Updates and Improvements

The third-generation Crowbox introduces significant upgrades in durability, weather resistance, maintenance, and usability, driven by feedback from builders and operators worldwide. This version is designed to be easier to build, maintain, and operate, with robust protection against curious Corvids and the elements.

Below is a breakdown of the key improvements and new features.

1. Tool-Free, No-Solder Assembly

  • 100% Solderless Build: All electrical connections use easy-to-crimp terminals and ring screws, eliminating the need for soldering.
  • DIY-Replaceable Sensors: The coin and perch sensors use foil-contact switches, which are easy to build, maintain, and replace with household materials.

2. Enhanced Weatherproofing

  • Sealed Perch Lid with Side Skirts: A “shoebox” style perch lid with integrated skirts on all sides blocks rain and snow, including wind-driven moisture.
  • Internal Coin Magazine: The coin supply is now completely enclosed inside the machine, removing a major leak point from previous versions.
  • Transparent Internal Lid Panel: A clear plastic shield below the perch adds an extra barrier against water ingress.
  • Drainage Features:
    • Basket drain holes allow water to escape in case of incursion.
    • Drip gaps in coin chutes divert water away from sensitive components.
    • Outrigger-style perch supports channel runoff outside the machine walls.

3. Durability & Reliability Upgrades

  • Counterweight-Based Perch Activation: The perch trigger mechanism now uses rocker arms with adjustable counterweights (no more degrading rubber bands), allowing precise tuning of activation force.
  • No Styrene Parts: All components previously made from UV-vulnerable styrene have been replaced with durable acrylic, extending field life and simplifying repairs.
  • Modular Rail System: The internal rail assembly is now fully removable (no glue), enabling complete access to internal parts for maintenance or upgrades.

4. Simplified Maintenance & Access

  • Electronics Sled Compartment: A dedicated slide-in sled organizes and protects electronic components, making removal and inspection fast and simple.
  • Sliding Coin Drawer: An all-new coin retrieval drawer under the basket allows you to check and collect deposited coins without opening the machine.
  • Screw-In Coin Funnels: The acrylic coin funnels are now secured with screws, not glue, making cleaning or part replacement straightforward.
  • Foil Tape Coin Sensor: A robust, low-cost sensor design that is easy to replace and resistant to humidity and temperature fluctuations—no specialized parts required.

5. Corvid-Proofing Enhancements

  • Anti-Tamper Sliding Lid Tabs: Tabs under the lid prevent clever birds from prying it open without triggering the correct mechanism.
  • Modular Access Without Structural Weak Points: All components are accessible without compromising the machine’s structural integrity—there are no glued-in panels or sealed compartments that prevent field repairs.

These changes make the Crowbox v3 stronger, smarter, and far easier to maintain than any previous version. Whether you're a hobbyist, researcher, or just a Corvid enthusiast, this machine is built to support long-term, real-world interaction with minimal fuss.
